Etapa III: Valdepeñas, heroica y dinámica - Valdepeñas, heroic and dynamic

Situated in the province of Ciudad Real, the city gets its name from the words ‘valle de peñas’ which means valley of rocks, in reference to the limestone that abounds in its subsoil and its location on a wide meander of the River Jabalón, surrounded by the foothills of the Sierra Morena that mark the southern boundary of the plains of La Mancha .
To speak of Valdepeñas is to speak of wine, history and culture. Each year at the beginning of September the city holds the Fiestas del Vino (wine festival) to praise and pay homage to wine. This festival has now been declared of National Touristic Interest.
Winemaking activities have been taking place in this area for more than 2500 years, as proven by the surprising discoveries uncovered at the archaeological excavations at Cerro de las Cabezas, where the remains of advanced winemaking equipment have been found in strata dated at around 700 B.C.
